"What is this that stands before me?
Figure in black that points at me
Turn around quick, and start to runFind out I'm the Chosen One, Oh nooooooo . . ."--Black Sabbath, Black Sabbath
The leaves are starting to turn, there's a cool crispness in the air, and the days are getting shorter. It can only mean one thing: My favourite holiday, Halloween, is right around the corner. I was curious how the name Halloween came about and why Sam spelled it (Hallowe'en) in this months' Book Buzz. Good ol' trusty Wikipedia had the answer:
WOULD YOU LIKE TO KNOW MORE?"The word Halloween is first attested in the 16th century and represents a Scottish variant of the fuller All-Hallows-Even ("evening"), that is, the night before All Hallows Day. Up through the early 20th century, the spelling "Hallowe'en" was frequently used, eliding the "v" and shortening the word."

Odds & Sods
Aubrey, my fiancee finally waded through Ken Follet's Fall of Giants (9780525951650) 36.00. She really enjoyed it, but she decided to read something a little more lighthearted this time around. She settled on Bruce Cameron's A Dog's Purpose (9780765326263) 22.99. Looking anything but purposeful, this is a picture of her on the couch with Lucy and Casey, our two mixed-beagles.
Happy Hallowe'en!
