GREAT SCOTT!  BACK TO THE FUTURE DAY!

  October 21, 2015, was the day that Marty McFly went back to the future, and here we are.  Some of the movie's predictions have come true.  As I was watching the Cubs playoff game last night, a couple of thoughts went through my head:  Firstly, I haven't seen a whiter crowd since presidential candidate Mitt Romney's concession speech, and if they go to the World Series then Back to the Future was right.  However, after last night's results, it's not looking good for the Cubbies, but you might want to have a few copies of Brad Epstein's Good Night Cubs (9781607303527) 12.95 in stock.

  Nothing against Robert Zemeckis and Bob Gale, but can you imagine what Back to the Future would have been like if Terry Gilliam had directed it?  It would have been awesomer!  Imagine Christopher Lloyd in 12 Monkeys!  Well, the next best thing for me was Mr. Gilliam writing a pre-posthumus memoir called Gilliamesque (9780062380746) 40.00.  Not only does he cover all the crazy Monty Python stuff, but it's chockfull of his art work and fun facts about his films, from Time Bandits to Zero Theorem.  Hmmm, I guess in a sense he has already covered all of that territory. 

  Marty McFly wouldn't have needed a crystal ball to predict that Louisville basketball coach Rick Pitino's program may be a little suspect.  Escort Katina Powell alleges in her new title, Breaking Cardinal Rules (9781939550286) 17.95 that she and others had sexual encounters and activities with basketball recruits in the men's dormitory at Louisville.  (FYI:  The Cardinals is the name of the mascot at the University of Louisville.)  Yesterday, she was interviewed on both ESPN and Good Morning America, and the story has been picked up by the national news media.  We have copies in stock.

  Marty also wouldn't have predicted the impact retired football players have on our society.  Former NY Giants lineman Michael Strahan is not only a fixture on TV, but he has written a self-help book called Wake Up Happy (9781476775685) 26.99.  Also, former Raven linebacker and acquitted murder suspect Ray Lewis has co-written his memoir, I Feel Like Going On (9781501112355) 26.99.  (Not to be confused with the Bad Company song of nearly the same title.)  In his book, Mr. Lewis adds details that were not released during his murder trial.  Apparently, he was so expensively dressed (His attire and jewelry were valued at over a quarter of a million dollars.) that he would have been foolish to kill anyone.  It was a rare example of the 'I am too well-dressed to kill' defense.  Seems legit.

 

  Finally, if I owned the time travelling DeLorean, I would have gone back in time to the American Revolution and hung out with the Marquis de Lafayette.  I guess I'll just have to settle for Sarah Vowell's Lafayette in the Somewhat United States (9781594631740) 27.95, instead.  Whoa, this is heavy . . .

We've had a plethora of authors visit us over the past few weeks.  Up and coming fantasy writer Greer Macallister popped in and autographed copies of her latest title, The Magician's Lie (9781402298684) 23.99.  Lily Tuck, National Book Award winner and mother of actress Jessica Tuck stopped in Monday and signed her autobiographical fiction book, The Double Life of Liliane (9780802124029) 26.00.  And lastly, Thrillmeister John Katzenbach put his 'John Hancock' on his next bestseller, The Dead Student (9780802123374) 26.00.  As per usual, first come, first served.

THE MAN IN THE LOW BASEMENT

  Maybe it was the drugs.

  Doctor Delay was in his basement preparing for his local cable access show, Book Stalkers.  Feeling a little under the weather, he had downed a cocktail of decongestant pills and aspirin with a shot of whiskey.  He had been staring at the gold foiled wallpaper directly behind his computer monitor for quite some time.  In a three foot by three foot section at eye level, he noticed striations of glittering light begin to coalesce into a slowly swirling vortex.  Then there seemed to be a tear in the fabric of time and space itself, and through this rent he could see and hear a neighboring parallel universe.  A well-coiffed Doctor Delay in a very expensive suit was seated on a TV set with a large studio audience in attendance.  Stoner Bill was nowhere to be seen.  David Baldacci was seated directly across from him and was obviously recounting a story:

  "So I'm in this restaurant with my wife and this other couple has been watching us during the entire meal.  The other woman gets up, walks up to our table, and asks me, "Are you that famous mystery writer?"  And I reply, "Well, as a matter of fact, I am."  She turns around and yells across the room, "I told you!  It's John Grisham!"  I nearly fall out of my chair and correct her, "No, I'm David Baldacci."  She turns around again and yells,  "You were right honey, it's that Italian guy!"

  Alternate universe Double D laughed and said, "That was David Baldacci, folks!  Make sure you buy his new kid's book, The Keeper (9780545831949) 17.99!" 

   "By the way folks, you haven't heard of next week's guest, yet, but Garth Risk Halberg's debut novel City on Fire (9780385353779) 30.00 was bought by Knopf for over $2 million.  It has already been on the New York Times Book Review's front page, and B&N's CEO has made his title an unofficial handsell for the upcoming holiday season.  Hey, maybe he'll buy me lunch!"  (laugh soundtrack)

   "Speaking of fire, our other guests on next week's show will be YouTube sensations Dan and Phil, who have written The Amazing Book Is Not on Fire (9781101939840) 18.99.  I'm not the demographic on this one, but apparently, it's what the kids are into.  We will be right back after these commercial messages . . ."

   There was a blinding flash of light and Doctor Delay was once again staring at his hazy reflection in the gold foil wallpaper behind his desk.  Stoner Bill tapped him on the shoulder and said, "We're ready to go on.  You better get into your pig costume."

The winner of the Man Booker Prize was announced today and the unanimous choice was Marlon James' A Brief History of Seven Killings (9781594633942) 17.00.  The central figure is reggae musician Bob Marley.  We should have more stock, shortly . . .

Our favourite author escort, Michele Pernia, brought Scott Westerfeld, Margo Lanagan, and Deborah  Biancotti in last week to sign our copies of their new young adult title, Zeroes (9781481443364) 19.99.  To no one's great surprise, the movie rights have already been sold.  As usual, it's first come, first served . . .

NOBEL PRIZE FOR LITERATURE DELICATESSEN

1)  MURAKAMI SANDWICH WITH AMERICAN CHEESE . . .  Both Bantam and most of the Free World have been waiting for George R.R. Martin's latest installment in The Game of Thrones series, The Winds of Winter, but alas, it looks like it won't be released anytime soon.  So with the holiday season right around the corner, what's a publisher to do?  Well, obviously, you repackage some of his old material, slap a snappy cover on it, and you call it A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms (9780345533487) 30.00.  The three novellas in this book take place about a hundred years before the events depicted in his Song of Ice and Fire series and the HBO TV show, and they are also available as 'graphic novels.'  Also, to cash in on the coloring book craze, The Official A Game of Thrones Coloring Book (9781101965764) 16.95 will release on October 27.  You might want to have a few extra red pencils  handy before you start . . . 

 

2)  PHILIP ROTH CORN BEEF ON RYE . . .  In Nicholas Sparks news:  It is very likely that Mr. Sparks will be snubbed by the Nobel Prize committee yet again.  However, it's not only doom and gloom for him; he has a new release this week called See Me (9781455520619) 27.00 . . . 'Feel me, touch me, heal me, listening to you, I get the music, gazing at you, I get the heat, following you, I climb the mountains, I get excitement at your feet . . .', and he has also signed a deal for a new TV show with the CW.  The main character is a romance writer who has divorced his wife of 25 years.  Now he has to learn how to be single all over again and learn how to date.  Oh, and the author is seen as an expert on love.  I just don't know how Mr. Sparks comes up with these original ideas . . .

 3)  JOYCE CAROL OATS VEGETABLE SANDWICH . . .  I hate to say it but steampunk is going mainstream.  First of all, Jim Butcher is starting a new steampunk series called The Cinder Spires.  The initial book in this series is The Aeronaut's Windlass (9780451466808) 27.95, and I'm sure, like The Dresden Files, there will be many more to come.  Also, the string of Zombie Halloween parties at Schulers Books has come to an end this year, and it is being replaced by a Steampunk Tea Party featuring Gail Carringer, the author of Prudence: The Custard Protocol (9780316212243) 20.00, on October 29.  Come out and play!

 

 As a last note, Joseph Fink and Jeffrey Cranor have written Welcome to Night Vale (9780062351425) 19.99, which ties into their wildly popular podcast.  It's not out until October 20, but it has the potential to be a huge sleeper upon its release.  It's what the kids are into . . . .

The venerable Wil Haygood stopped in today and signed copies of his new title, Showdown: Thurgood Marshall and the Supreme Court Nomination that Changed America (9780307957191) 32.50.  With the state of race relations in our country, his trials and tribulations are still relevant.  As usual, it's first come, first served.

Also, we are distributing Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette's new book, Big Lessons from a Small Town (9781933926599) 17.95.  It has a folksy rural cover that will appeal to his base. Bill is also out pounding the pavement with autographings so it's getting some buzz . . .
